Saakashvili says Aliyev’s statement on transit routes undermines everything Georgia has achieved

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on Facebook that Ilham Aliyev’s statement — that today transit routes pass through Georgia, and tomorrow through Armenia — destroys everything Georgia achieved in the 1990s and 2000s as a country.

“Georgia has found itself in an extremely difficult geopolitical deadlock, which in the near future will end either by eliminating us as an independent state, or by escaping the grip of the Ivanishvili mafia and taking the path of rapid national development,” Saakashvili stated.

On Jan. 21, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan discussed the geopolitical situation in the region and new transit routes. Ilham Aliyev and Vahagn Khachaturyan stated that freight currently transported through Georgia between Armenia and Azerbaijan will in the future be moved directly between the two countries.

At present, the volume of such freight is very limited. Before 2025, there had been no freight shipments between the two countries for decades.
