The National Interest: Achieving a full peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is unrealistic

The West’s ongoing efforts to achieve a full peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan are unrealistic, The National Interest writes. According to the article, establishment of basic security is necessary before progress can be made toward a lasting peace treaty. Without pre-established, credible security guarantees, the attempts to seek peace under the barrel of a gun will only serve Russian interests in the South Caucasus. While Baku’s policy during talks seems to be focused on establishing corridors and transit routes, Armenia is pushing for an open, free-market regionalism and broader regional connectivity. Baku prefers informal deals without international security guarantees, while Armenia pushes for security guarantees and international involvement. Most importantly, Baku continues to threaten to use force, while Yerevan advocates for demilitarization. Thus, Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan are one of total misalignment, not only in terms of interests but also in terms of vision and modus operandi.
