Russian Foreign Ministry: NATO’s actions in the South Caucasus will have devastating consequences for the overall Eurasian security

At a press briefing, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry A. E. Nastasin commented on NATO’s invitation to Armenia and Azerbaijan to attend the organization’s summit.

“It is another example when the Americans are trying to spread their destructive influence on all regions of the world. Washington aims to tear our friends and neighbors away from cooperation with Russia. We can see how the NATO members are trying to introduce their approaches to regional issues. Such initiatives have led to disastrous consequences more than once,” Nastasin said.

According to him, NATO’s invitation aims to show that “their aggressive policy is approved outside the organization.”

“Armenia is being filled with arms; they are trying to transform its military system and destroy the existing collective defense mechanisms within the CSTO. NATO members are also making their trip to Baku, which exacerbates the tension between the two countries, does not contribute to the Armenian-Azerbaijani dialogue, and provokes an arms race in the region. To remind, trilateral agreements continue to be the basis for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus. We are convinced that stability and security in the South Caucasus can and should be ensured by the states of the region. The imposition of their recipes by the Euro-Atlanticians, far from understanding the peculiarities of the region, leads to the emergence of new distinguishing features in the South Caucasus. It will have devastating consequences not only for that region, but also for the overall Eurasian security. We hope that Baku and Yerevan understand it well,” the official noted.
