Iranologist: Iran will not tolerate the presence of the armed forces of other countries in Syunik
Iran’s stance has not changed; it has always expressed its opposition to the opening of the so-called “Zangezur corridor”, Iranologist Armen Vardanyan told ABC media.
“Iran has always considered the change of physical borders in the region unacceptable. There have also been reports that Iran restrained Azerbaijan from carrying out military operations against Armenia in 2021 aimed to open the so-called corridor. Let’s also remember that Iran conducted large-scale military drills on the border with Azerbaijan for the first time in the past 30 years, with that being a message to Azerbaijan,” the Iranologist said.
According to him, for Iran, Syunik and the so-called “Zangezur corridor” have always been important for the control of the region and access to Europe.
“They have no desire at all to see armed forces of other countries in that area, and even Russian presence,” Vardanyan noted.
The pro-Westernism of the present Armenian government does not cause the deterioration of Armenian-Iranian relations. According to the expert, Armenia has repeatedly stated that it will not become a platform and a tool for an anti-Iranian operation.
