US State Department shares OSCE concerns over Azerbaijan’s parliamentary election
At a press briefing, Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Matthew Miller referred to the snap parliamentary election held in Azerbaijan: “So we share the observation and concerns of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights monitoring mission regarding the Azerbaijani September 1st parliamentary election. And we urge Azerbaijan to implement the OSCE’s previous recommendations as well as ones that we understand to be forthcoming, and enable the exercise of fundamental freedoms by its people consistent with its constitution and international commitments.”
In a joint statement of international observers of the OSCE ODIHR and the OSCE PA, issued earlier, it was mentioned that the early parliamentary election held in Azerbaijan did not offer political alternatives to the voters and was held in violation of fundamental freedoms and with excessive restrictions on the media.
