Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accepted the invitation of the Russian side and will attend the BRICS summit in Kazan next month, which comes as an unexpected decision, EADaily writes.
As noted, the South Caucasian republic previously made it clear that it does not seek to join the bloc of major economies, which is an alternative to Western blocs.
As mentioned, the expected contact between Armenia and Azerbaijan at the highest political level in Kazan will precede another opportunity to make a breakthrough in the process of normalization of relations. Earlier, Azerbaijan sent an invitation to Armenia to participate in the U.N. COP29 conference.
It seems extremely unlikely that Nikol Pashinyan will personally accept this invitation. “Even if an unexpected breakthrough happens in the negotiations and the parties reach the conclusion of a peace treaty, the visit of the head of Armenia to the capital of Azerbaijan still seems like a great political fantasy,” reads the article. At the same time, it is quite possible that Armenia will be represented at COP29 at the level of foreign minister. “The November visit of Armenia’s chief negotiator to the capital of Azerbaijan—regarding the conclusion of the peace treaty—will be a convincing confirmation of Yerevan’s determination to achieve a quick result in a direct dialogue with Baku,” EADaily writes.
