75 US Congress members call on Biden to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan
Seventy-five members of the U.S. Congress have called on the
Biden administration to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan, prohibit U.S. military
aid to Azerbaijan, provide robust humanitarian assistance to support the
displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh and deploy international observers to
the Lachin Corridor.
As Armenpress reports, the initiators of the letter were
Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Member of
the U.S. House of Representatives Anna Eshoo.
The letter was signed by members of the two congressional
parties. The signatories condemned the “unprovoked military offensive” on
Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) and the “cruel nine-month blockade”, which have left
the region’s Armenian population with “no option but to flee”.
The members of the Congress stated that despite the fact
that several leading scholars have sounded the alarm of genocide against the
population of Nagorno-Karabakh, a humanitarian disaster is now occuring, which
can in fact be prevented.
They propose enforcing Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support
Act, a provision of current law that prohibits U.S. military aid to Azerbaijan.
They also call on the Biden administration to impose targeted sanctions on
Azerbaijani officials under the Global Magnitsky Act.
In addition, the authors of the letter propose providing
robust humanitarian assistance to support Artsakh’s displaced population and
rallying the international community to do the same.
