Zelenskyy wishing to get territories he controls under NATO
In an interview with Sky News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested a ceasefire deal could be struck if Ukrainian territory he controls could be taken “under the NATO umbrella.”
“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we need to take under the NATO umbrella the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control,” Zelenskyy said.
According to him, this move would allow him to negotiate the return of the rest later “in a diplomatic way.”
Zelenskyy said an invitation to Ukraine to join NATO, which would mean the alliance recognizes Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, could end the “hot phase” of the war.
The Ukrainian president added that this needs to be done “fast.”
