Romanian president to resign

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced his decision to resign on Feb. 12, Digi24 reports.

“In a few days, the Romanian parliament will vote in favor of my removal, and Romania will face a crisis. All these efforts will have consequences both within the country and, unfortunately, beyond its borders,” Iohannis said.

According to the Romanian president, he is stepping down to protect Romania from the crisis, and unnecessary and negative developments. He added that his removal by parliament would make Romania “a laughingstock for the whole world.” Iohannis has been in office since 2014.
