UEFA could boycott World Cup over Infantino’s private investment plan

UEFA could boycott World Cup over Infantino’s private investment plan

UEFA will boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if FIFA President Gianni Infantino goes ahead with his proposal to sell off a stake in the World Cup, Sky Sports reports.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of all of UEFA’s 55 member associations on Thursday afternoon, with a 55-0 vote.

The publication states such a boycott could potentially derail Infantino’s initiative, as investors would be unlikely to commit funds to the tournament without the participation of European national teams.

Infantino’s proposed plan would allow private investors to acquire part of the World Cup’s commercial rights in an effort to attract additional funding.
