Spain installs new barriers in Ceuta to curb migrant influx

Spain has begun installing new barriers near the Tarajal dock in the city of Ceuta amid a mass influx of undocumented migrants, the Europa Press news agency reports.

The work began on the morning of Aug. 1. The structure consists of a 500-meter floating barrier standing between 30 and 70 centimeters above the water.

The barrier includes a passageway for patrol boats monitoring the border area.

On July 30, thousands of migrants breached the border fence to cross from Morocco into Spain, with around 60,000 people entering Ceuta.

Spanish broadcaster RTVE, citing the country’s interior ministry, reported that more than 48,300 undocumented migrants have already been returned to Morocco.
