Talking about a report issued by the Friends of Armenia Network, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told RIA Novosti that the presence of the Russian 102nd Military Base and that of the Russian border guards in Armenia is the only real guarantee of the country’s sovereignty.
Commenting on the report, titled “Deepening EU-Armenia Relations: More Europe in Armenia; More Armenia in Europe”, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that “the security proposals are totally against common sense”.
“The presence of the 102nd military base and that of the Russian border guards is the only real guarantee of Armenia’s sovereignty. The idea that their withdrawal will somehow strengthen the republic’s military capability is dangerous demagoguery,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Forcing Armenia to review the existing security system today, the West does not offer anything precise in return,” the ministry noted.
