Iran’s ex-President Ahmadinejad to run in presidential election

The former president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has registered as a candidate for the country’s upcoming presidential election, IRIB reports.

Ahmadinejad was the sixth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was elected in 2005 and served until 2013.

Besides Ahmadinejad, 12 more candidates have registered.

The registration process will end on June 3. In the period between June 4 and June 10, the Guardian Council of Iran will examine each applicant’s compliance with the requirements.

People aged 40 to 75 who hold at least a master’s degree are eligible to apply. After the Council processes applications, Iran’s Ministry of Interior will announce the names of approved candidates on June 11. Afterward, an election campaign will get underway, which will last until June 26.
