SWI swissinfo.ch, a division of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, referred to COP29 to be held in Azerbaijan in November.
As noted, Azerbaijan, a large oil and gas exporter, will host COP29, the U.N. climate conference, this year. Violations of human rights in the country are record high. Giorgi Gogia, associate director of Europe and Central Asia Division at Human Rights Watch noted that important actions need to be taken to influence climate change, which requires the engagement of independent civil society, while in Azerbaijan, dozens of journalists, representatives of civil society, and activists are arrested for trumped-up cases.
“The U.N. must be sure that the host country’s agreement contains clauses that allow civil society to freely participate in this important event. The question is not where it is located, but how it is located,” Gogia said.
