Democracy or manipulation? V-Dem’s analysis

The state of democracy in Armenia is deteriorating, according to Staffan Lindberg, director of the V-Dem Institute.

In the institute’s 2025 Democracy Report, it is noted that Armenia has now moved into the category of countries with selective democracy, whereas in 2018 the situation was quite different.

Experts point out that by equating democracy with populism, the authorities are trying to justify their existence, while selective democracy functions merely as manipulation.
