Trump says Iran prolonging conflict in hope of Democratic victory

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of trying to prolong its conflict with the United States in the hope that Democrats will return to power.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed Tehran believed a Democratic administration would allow Iran to effectively obtain a nuclear weapon.

“They are doing everything they can to get rid of me because they think the Democrats will effectively allow them to have a nuclear weapon. They will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

He once again reiterated his decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran’s nuclear program. “I terminated the worst agreement I have ever seen—Obama’s nuclear deal, the JCPOA. What a terrible agreement. It was a path to nuclear weapons,” Trump asserted.

Trump has said the war with Iran could end before November’s congressional elections, although he expects the conflict to conclude immediately after the vote.

The US midterm elections are scheduled for 3 November. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the Senate’s 100 seats are due to be contested.
