Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States takes initial steps toward easing military pressure, a senior Iranian government official told Kyodo News on Tuesday, as part of Tehran’s ramped-up efforts to revive negotiations with Washington.

Tehran plans to use the U.N. General Assembly gathering this week in New York to consult with countries acting as intermediaries.

The official ruled out a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump on the fringes of the gathering, but said progress toward an agreement remains possible.

Earlier, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that Iranian authorities had conveyed terms for ending the war to the U.S. via Qatari intermediaries and were awaiting a response from U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Rezaei, Iran’s conditions include halting the war on all fronts, unfreezing Iranian assets, and lifting the naval blockade.
