Ursula von der Leyen: EU will phase out Russian gas by end of 2027

The European Union intends to completely stop imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during her speech at the European Parliament today.

She noted that four years ago, Russia tried to blackmail the EU over energy.

“Four years ago, Russia tried to blackmail us. At that time, 45% of our gas imports came from Russia. Almost overnight, a large part of these imports stopped. But Europe maintained its unity and emerged stronger from this situation,” the EU leader said.

The European Commission President said that the EU has diversified its gas supplies and significantly accelerated investment in clean energy.

“Today, the share of Russian gas in our imports has fallen from 45% to 12%. By the end of next year, we will reduce it to zero,” she emphasized.

It should be noted that at the beginning of 2026, the EU adopted rules providing for the gradual phase-out of Russian gas imports. According to official EU data, imports of Russian LNG are expected to be completely halted by the end of 2026, while pipeline gas imports are expected to be fully stopped no later than November 30, 2027.
