Zakharova: Armenia’s possible exit from the CSTO has nothing to do with the country’s national interests

Armenia’s possible exit from the CSTO should be based on the country’s real needs, and not on a “love affair” with the West; such a decision has nothing to do with the country’s national interests. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said this to RIA Novosti.

She noted that every country is free to choose which unions it wants to develop relations with, depending on specific reasons and factors.

“This should be done considering reality, the real needs of the country, and in no case should the country succumb to another temptation of Western scenarios,” Zakharova said, noting that “love affair” may be dangerous, because security issues should be considered in this case.

Zakharova said she does not know why politicians in Yerevan “have been imposing the notion of the negative role of the CSTO on the people of Armenia”.

“I think it has nothing to do with the true national interests of Armenia,” Zakharova said, accusing Brussels of turning the people of Armenia against the CSTO. “There has never been anything bad from the CSTO,” she noted.
