US and partners discussing possibility of Georgia’s election irregularity investigation
The United States has said its call for an investigation into election-related violations in Georgia does not mean they should be investigated by Georgian authorities, but rather by “a relevant body.”
“We are consulting with our European partners about what an appropriate body to conduct such an investigation might be,” Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Matthew Miller said.
The Biden administration will closely monitor the actions of the Georgian government in the coming days. Washington does not have a final opinion of the results of the Oct. 26 election, but Miller did not rule out further consequences if the line of the Georgian government does not change.
“Georgia’s actions will determine our responses. You have seen us already suspend $95 million in assistance to the Government of Georgia. We have other assistance that remains under review. We obviously support everyone’s right to peacefully protest, and we want to see a full investigation of the alleged irregularities in the election,” Miller concluded.
