U.S. President Joe Biden expressed deep concern about Georgia’s retreat from democracy and called on the republic’s authorities to enter into a dialogue with the opposition in order to restore the “fairness of the elections” after the Oct. 26 vote, the White House writes, citing Biden.
The U.S. president “is deeply alarmed” about Tbilisi’s democratic backsliding, which, according to him, is due to the enactment of legislation “mirroring Russian laws that restrict fundamental freedoms and limit the space for independent civil society organizations.”
“Most recently, Georgia’s October 26 parliamentary elections were marred by numerous recorded misuses of administrative resources as well as voter intimidation and coercion,” Biden said.
