True independence or loss of sovereignty? ՛՛Kommersant’s՛՛ commentary on the differing views of Pashinyan and the opposition

Armenia celebrated the 35th anniversary of gaining its independence. However, according to Nikol Pashinyan, the republic has in reality become independent and free only recently, since it is only now marking this day in conditions of peace rather than war. The Armenian opposition, meanwhile, views this stability in a completely different light, Kommersant writes.

The core thesis of Pashinyan during his speech devoted to the independence of the Republic, was the fulfillment of the ‘’Armenian dream’’ of a state that is becoming more just, independent, united, sovereign, and democratic. And as the publication notes, this thesis was naturally far from universally accepted. Expectedly, the factors that the authorities considered a sign of emerging stability were viewed by the Armenian opposition as major threats and a loss of sovereignty. Yet reality in the South Caucasus—and consequently in Armenia itself—is transforming regardless. In a sense, this places the country in a position somewhat similar to the circumstances of 35 years ago. ‘’Just as in 1991, it is clear that a return to the old is impossible, but the new also harbors many risks, dangers, and unpredictability,’’- wrote expert Sergey Markedonov in his Telegram channel.
