Putin-Trump historic call: Political reconciliation or shared interests?

The leaders of Russia and the United States have set a record—for the first time in history, a phone conversation between the heads of the two states lasted 2.5 hours. According to official statements, they discussed a wide range of topics, but the central issue, of course, was  the Russia-Ukraine war. Official reports indicate that Putin and Trump agreed on a 30-day ceasefire.

Wars cannot end with a single phone call, an expert on international affairs notes. If that were the case, global conflicts would have been resolved long ago.

There is growing speculation that Trump wants to bring global peace from a business perspective—trade must develop in the world, and borders should remain open. According to official reports, Putin and Trump understand and trust each other well on these and other issues. The strong will of the presidents is the best guarantee that Russia and the United States will follow the path of restoring relations.
