Azerbaijan destroys another cemetery in Shushi
Between Oct. 5 and Nov. 3, another Armenian cemetery in
Shushi was damaged. Bulldozers dumped piles of debris atop the old
Ghazanchetsots cemetery, endangering the already fragmented tombstones.
The location of the cemetery is confirmed by maps, publications,
and recent photographs. The 18-19th century cemetery had been seriously damaged
in the Soviet period.
By the 1990s, 45 tombstones remained in the cemetery. One of
them dated back to 1758, marking the passing of Stepan, a blacksmith from
Ghazanchi village in Nakhijevan.
Since November 2020, this is the sixth Armenian cemetery
damaged. Earlier, the cemeteries near Mets Tagher, Sghnakh, Vazgenashen and
Shushi’s Northern and Yerevan Gates cemeteries were destroyed.
