Iran’s Foreign Ministry: Tehran and Washington may reach a new agreement

The U.S. and Iran could easily reach an agreement in negotiations in Oman if Washington’s only demand is for Tehran to halt the development of nuclear weapons, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Political Deputy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, said in an interview with Serbian radio and TV.

“The Americans say that Iran should not have nuclear weapons. We repeatedly insist that we are not interested in nuclear weapons. Thus, if the only demand from the Americans is that Iran does not have nuclear weapons, we will have a new agreement,” Takht-Ravanchi said. According to the Iranian diplomat, if all participants in the negotiations in Oman have “political will,” it will be possible to reach a new agreement.

“However, if someone wants to include other issues in the negotiations, thus complicating the process, we will not succeed,” the deputy head of the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Ministry said. The first round of talks between the Iranian and U.S. delegations will take place on April 12 in Oman. The main negotiators will be Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy Steven Witkoff. According to Iranian statements, the negotiations will not be direct but mediated by Muscat. For its part, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the upcoming event can be characterized as a meeting rather than negotiations.
