Russian political scientist: It is necessary to take into account the concerns of Armenia regarding the “Zangezur corridor”
The gradual withdrawal of Russian border guards from Armenia is a direct result of the policy adopted by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, political scientist Dmitry Solonnikov said.
According to him, Yerevan no longer hides its intention to strengthen relations with the West.
“Yerevan does not hide the fact that it sees its future in relations with the U.S. and the EU, and is gradually coming under the political and military control of NATO. That is why it is necessary to break military-political relations with Russia. But the economic ties with Russia will still be preserved, because it is at their expense that the transition to the western vector is being planned,” the expert explained.
Political scientist Andrey Kortunov thinks that one of the main obstacles to the implementation of the “Zangezur corridor” project is Armenia’s fears. According to him, this factor should be taken into account in the further discussions of the initiative.
“This is a transport artery that passes through the territory of Armenia. It is necessary to somehow reach an agreement and convince him that there is no threat to the country’s territorial integrity and independence. There are well-known cases in history when such corridors had territorial status. And, of course, this is not what Armenia wants,” the political scientist noted.
