Azerbaijani soldier sentenced to life imprisonment for Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine guard’s murder

The penalty on Azerbaijani soldier Huseyn Akhundov has been made stiffer. Akhundov illegally entered the sovereign territory of Armenia and was convicted of murdering the guard of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC). As Pastinfo reports, the Criminal Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Grigor Hovhannisyan, upheld the appeal filed by the relatives of ZCMC guard Hayrapet Meliksetyan, partially overturning the verdict of the First Instance Court and sentencing Akhundov to life imprisonment.

To remind, on April 10, two Azerbaijani servicemen, Agshin Babirov and Huseyn Akhundov, illegally entered the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia. People first found Agshin Babirov and turned him in to the police. Babirov said he was not alone. For days on end, neither the police nor the National Security Service were able to find the commando. The latter managed to commit a murder in the meantime. He killed 57-year-old Hayrapet Meliksetyan, the ZCMC guard, on April 12. The autopsy revealed gunshot wounds in Meliksetyan’s head and chest. A double-barreled shotgun and other items were found at the scene. Criminal proceedings were brought in the Investigative Committee under Article 155, Part 1 and Article 335, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code.
