‘Trump Card’ beats FIFA’s red card: US player’s dismissal overturned after Trump call
If you get a red card at the World Cup, you miss the next game… Unless Donald Trump steps in, Euronews writes.
“Shame on you!” That was the now-viral reaction from Belgium’s opposition Socialist party to FIFA’s decision to reverse the US’ star striker Folarin Balogun’s red card, following a personal phone call from Donald Trump to FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
Balogun was set to sit out today’s last-16 knockout clash with the Belgians after receiving a red card for stepping on the foot of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic in a round-of-32 clash that the US won 2-0.
One phone call later, and it seems like Trump is calling the shots.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“I didn’t know that at the World Cup the 5th of July is actually the first of April. It’s April Fools,” Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia said.
