The CSTO does not aim to become a counterweight to NATO, CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov told BelTA.
According to Tasmagambetov, both the organization and its members are in favor of abandoning block perspective, which reduces the possibilities of cooperation and, often, significantly limits the national sovereignty of the participants of such organizations.
“At the same time, of course, NATO’s actions are observed and analyzed. Experts and representatives of the leadership of the member states discuss in detail all the factors that in one way or another affect the situation in the area of the CSTO responsibility. At the same time, the CSTO has the ability to quickly adopt and implement all necessary decisions, taking into account the interests of all member states,” the official noted.
Tasmagambetov noted that the CSTO’s strategic goal is to ensure collective security by consolidating the efforts and resources of CSTO member states on the basis of strategic partnership and generally recognized norms and principles of international law.
