Artak Beglaryan: The issue of the return of Artsakh military and political prisoners should be raised before COP29

COP29, the U.N. climate change conference, is a “good” opportunity to raise the problems facing Armenia, attract international attention, and talk about hostages, Artak Beglaryan, the former state minister of the Republic of Artsakh, told ABC media.

“The Republic of Armenia has a lot of work to do in this regard. The authorities should direct the attention of the international community to the return of the military-political prisoners of Artsakh and increase international pressure through diplomatic channels. On the other hand, it is clear that Aliyev is trying to make this issue one of the points of the general process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan in order to get a concession from Armenia in return,” Beglaryan said.

He believes that the representatives of the countries attending COP29 can also raise this issue, if of course they are informed about it through diplomatic steps.

“In addition, those representatives who will participate in COP29 should raise the issues of genocide, forced displacement of the people of Artsakh, protection of cultural heritage, public and private property,” the former state minister said.

To remind, on Nov. 11, Baku will host COP29, the U.N. climate change conference. About 80 countries, including Armenia, have been invited to the conference.

Nikol Pashinyan announced at a press conference on Aug. 31 that there is no decision to attend or not yet.

Before that, ABC media had sent a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find out if there was a decision to participate. You can see the answer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the link below.

Throughout this time, the topic was on our radar. Our reports on COP29 can be found below.
