Microsoft aims for users to speak to PCs, let AI take control

Microsoft has begun a major overhaul of its Windows operating system, aiming to transform it into a platform operated through voice commands and artificial intelligence (AI).

In an interview with The Verge, company Executive Vice President Yusuf Mehdi discussed plans to integrate AI capabilities across all layers of the system.

According to Microsoft leadership, a new phase of evolution is beginning, in which AI will no longer be an isolated tool but an inseparable part of everyday computing for hundreds of millions of users.

“Our goal is to rebuild the entire operating system around AI, creating what you could call a true AI computer,” Mehdi said.

The current version of Windows 11 already includes some AI features. For example, the Copilot assistant can now be activated by voice with the command “Hey, Copilot!” This allows users to quickly summon the assistant for answers or work-related help.

The Copilot Vision feature, now available in all regions where Copilot operates, enables AI to analyze on-screen content. This helps AI assist users with applications, troubleshoot problems, and provide instructions. Copilot Vision requires explicit user consent to scan the screen.

Additionally, Microsoft is testing Copilot Actions, which will allow the AI assistant to perform tasks directly on the user’s PC.
