British PM ignores calls to resign, says he’ll ‘get on with governing’

British PM Keir Starmer has told his cabinet he will “get on with governing” and a leadership contest has not been triggered as he faces growing calls to resign, the BBC writes.

His statement comes amid pressure from Labour MPs demanding either his immediate resignation or the setting of a clear timeline for stepping down.

Pressure has been building on Starmer after Labour’s disastrous performance in last week’s English council elections.

“The past ​48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families,” Starmer told ministers.

“The country expects ​us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and ​what we must do as a Cabinet.”
