EU ambassador: The EU is committed to peace and stability in this region
The EU is committed to peace and stability in the South
Caucasus region and is investing high-level, political capital in this process.
The EU will also consider the issue of further support to the people who were
displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh and settled in Armenia. Head of the EU
Delegation to Armenia Vassilis Maragos said this in his interview with
Armenpress․
Maragos also referred to issues concerning the bilateral
agenda, including visa liberalization issues. As regards the bilateral
relations between Armenia and the EU, he noted that the EU and Armenia are
actively working to identify areas of further cooperation.
“The European Union is committed to peace and stability in
this region and we are investing important, high-level, political capital in
this process. As you said, the European Union has made very clear its position
against the use of force and in support of the human rights of Karabakh
Armenians,” the ambassador noted.
According to him, the European Union has a very clear
understanding of the situation on the ground through the EU Mission in Armenia
and its contacts with both Yerevan and Baku.
“We are also aware of the importance these issues have for
Armenia and more broadly for peace and stability in the region, which is our
primary aim. The EU has repeatedly called on the sides to ensure non-use of
force and a distancing of forces to reduce tensions and potential escalation on
the ground,” he said and added that the EU hopes that some understanding can be
reached in the near future on this and other issues, including during the next
meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani border
commissions, which is scheduled for Nov. 30, 2023.
