BMW recalls more than 318,000 vehicles in US over fire risk

BMW’s North American unit, BMW of North America, is recalling more than 318,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says.

The recall affects a total of 318,495 vehicles across several models, including the 2023-2024 Toyota Supra, 2022-2025 2 Series Coupe, 2022-2026 5 Series, 2023-2024 Z4, 4 Series Gran Coupe, 4 Series Convertible, 4 Series Coupe, 2021-2025 3 Series and 2021-2024 X3.

“The engine starter may overheat and catch fire due to a worn internal component,” the agency said in a statement.

NHTSA said dealers will replace the engine starters free of charge. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail by Aug. 28.

BMW manufactures BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles, as well as motorcycles and engines. The company is headquartered in Munich and employed 154,540 people last year.
