Diplomatic efforts help ease Iran-Ukraine tensions, persuade Tehran not to retaliate, NYT says

Iran was considering the possibility of striking a Ukrainian port in response to an attack on its vessel in the Caspian Sea, Iranian and Western sources familiar with the matter told The New York Times.

The sources said Tehran could have used a ballistic missile with a small warhead, as the planned strike was intended to be “symbolic” and cause minimal damage. Iranian officials hoped the move would bring the confrontation to an end, but Western officials warned of an unpredictable Ukrainian response and the risk of a broader conflict.

According to NYT sources, diplomatic contacts ultimately helped ease tensions and convinced Iran to abandon its initial plans.

On July 25, Ukraine’s armed forces struck an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, killing one person and wounding another. Following the incident, Iran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires to deliver a formal protest note.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the Ukrainian attack a violation of the UN Charter and said its aim was to draw Europe into a war between Iran and the United States.

Later, Araghchi said Ukraine’s foreign minister had assured him that the strike on the Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea was unintentional and that Kyiv did not want to escalate tensions.
