More in Washington believe Ukraine can prevail in war, Politico says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he convinced the United States of Ukraine’s ability to prevail in the war, Politico reports.
According to the publication, Zelensky left Washington optimistic following his meeting with US President Donald Trump. Another positive development for Kyiv was the US Senate’s approval of a bill imposing new sanctions on countries that purchase Russian oil.
As Politico notes, Zelensky stressed that the sanctions would help reinforce Ukraine’s battlefield gains and bring peace negotiations closer, while reiterating his call on partners to increase deliveries of key weapons systems.
The publication also states that a growing number of officials within the US political establishment now believe Ukraine is capable of succeeding in the war. According to Senator John Boozman, the shift in sentiment is linked to the recent success of Ukrainian forces on the battlefield.
“There is an entirely different vibe than a year ago with Trump and Zelensky given that Ukraine is doing much better in the war,” a former Trump administration official said.
