No state possesses truly “super” power: Guterres bids farewell to the UN

Recent events have shown that the power of superpowers is not so super after all, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his farewell address to the UN General Assembly.

He stated that it has become increasingly clear in recent times that the power of superpowers is limited and that no state possesses truly “super” power.

According to Guterres, military strength, technological superiority or economic power alone cannot ensure security and stability. This requires a multilateral, UN-centered international system.

Guterres emphasized that there is no need to build this system from scratch: “We already have the UN Charter. It is the backbone of the just system I am talking about,” Guterres stressed.

At the same time, Guterres emphasized that The United Nations Security Council must be reformed.

He stressed the importance of reforming the Security Council, arguing that ensuring its legitimacy and effectiveness is essential to addressing the challenges facing today’s world. “The Security Council was established after the Second World War. But the world has undergone fundamental changes since then,” Guterres noted.
