Russian Security Council: Armenia has not appealed to the ICC yet regarding the issues that served as the basis for ratifying the Rome Statute

Armenia has still not applied to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the issues that served as the reason for ratifying the Rome Statute. This was reported to journalists by the Russian Security Council, TASS writes.

“Three years ago, when Armenia hastily ratified the Rome Statute, the official reason given was a potential international investigation into possible crimes on the country’s territory during the escalation of border conflicts. I cannot judge to what extent this explanation corresponded to the real motives. However, as far as I know, the Armenian authorities have still not applied to the court and have not initiated any investigation,” they noted.

The Security Council also recalled that the obligation to ratify the Rome Statute and implement its provisions was explicitly enshrined in the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the European Union. “In fact, joining the ICC statute and recognizing its jurisdiction is one of the key political conditions for countries seeking EU membership,” they added.

The Security Council emphasized that Russia’s position regarding the ICC is well known. “The court itself has repeatedly proven its politicization, bias, readiness to carry out the political orders of Western sponsors, and, consequently, its worthlessness and uselessness from the perspective of international law and justice,” they pointed out.
