4 EU states demand that Brussels impose sanctions against Georgia
Estonia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Sweden are pushing the EU into imposing sanctions on Georgia because of the foreign agents law, the Financial Times writes, referring to two sources.
The proposed restrictions include the freezing of EU funds to Georgia, targeted sanctions as well as the suspension of visa-free travel to EU countries, which has been in effect for Georgian citizens since 2017.
At the same time, some EU members are against the revocation of visa-free travel. They think that “you have to be careful not to target the wrong people”. These countries are considering “different measures of pressure on the Georgian government” and propose discussing the issue at a meeting of EU foreign ministers next week.
