South Korean president may be prevented from leaving country
The anti-corruption investigation body of South Korea plans to prohibit President Yoon Suk Yeol from leaving the country, Yonhap News Agency reports. The country’s Police and Prosecutors’ Office have initiated an investigation into the president’s declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law.
On the evening of Dec. 3, Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law to combat paralysis of the executive branch due to actions by “elements from the North Korean side” and the parliamentary opposition. The martial law was lifted approximately six hours later. On Dec. 4, the opposition began an impeachment process in parliament, arguing that the president had violated the constitution, as there had been no grounds for declaring martial law.
