Nearly 6,000 die in France due to heatwave
A total of 5,764 excess deaths were recorded in France during the heatwave that lasted from June 17 to July 2, the country’s national public health agency said.
The figure is 36% higher than the expected mortality rate for the same period.
Around two-thirds of those who died were people aged over 75.
Experts warn that such extreme heat will become increasingly frequent as climate change continues.
