Disobedience acts led by Archbishop Bagrat attract international media coverage

The international press widely covers the protests led by Archbishop Bagrat. In particular, Deutsche Welle noted that the Opposition in Armenia called on its supporters to participate in the civil disobedience actions to be held on May 10. “For the first time in the post-Soviet history of this country, protests are being led by the Church, which does not seem strange to its participants,” the news agency wrote, adding that according to many of the protesters, traditional political forces do not enjoy special authority.

In a conversation with Politico, protesters stated that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan must leave and “someone else will have a better plan” to avoid a conflict with Azerbaijan.

The Washington Post, for its part, wrote that thousands of protesters gathered in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, thus voicing protest against the government’s decision to relinquish the control of border villages to Armenia’s old enemy, Azerbaijan.

From the English-language media outlets, the European service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Reuters, Associated Press News, and The Telegraph covered the events.

Russian NTV and Channel One reported that tens of thousands of people in Yerevan are protesting against border delimitation and unilateral concessions to Azerbaijan. The rally and protests are given coverage in such authoritative Russian media outlets as TASS, RIA Novosti, Gazeta, Lenta, Kommersant, EADaily, Izvestiya, Interfax, etc.
